Trauma & Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Trauma or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a psychological and often physical impairment typically following a person experiencing one or a series of traumatic events. The result is a severe form of anxiety that can be very debilitating. It can be so overwhelming that a person loses their sense of being able to cope with everyday life. The situation is often (but not always) one where the individual fears for or feels a direct threat to their life, safety, psychological wellbeing and/or security.
What types of events lead to trauma / PTSD?
Trauma or PTSD can result from a one-off experience such as a serious accident, physical or sexual assault, a natural disaster such as floods, bushfires or witnessing a violent death. They can also result from repeated experiences such as child abuse, neglect, verbal and/or physical abuse.
Do I need help?
Common emotions that people experience following a traumatic event are anxiety, fear, anger, sadness and despair. For some individuals, these emotions and somewhat manageable and go away over time. For others, these feelings are very distressing and persist for weeks, months or longer. When one experiences distressing symptoms that persist, this is when it is clear that they need to get help. Common symptoms that require professional help include:
- Flashbacks or memories of the event that caused the trauma that feel extremely real, as if one is re-experiencing the event
- Physical anxiety symptoms including sweating, a racing heart and/or panic attacks
- Feeling emotionally numb
- Avoidance of situations that remind the individual of the traumatic event
- Sporadic feelings of irritability and/or anxiety with no apparent source
